It’s just amazing how fast the measuring stick changes. Some say that 50 is the new 30 and with the big 5-0 looming on the horizon, I like the sound of that! To make this more relevant, 12-megapixels (12MP) is the new 8MP and the Canon G9 is the perfect example of this logic, with a 12MP sensor in a very compact form. Retail price for this little jewel is $499, but I have seen a few reputable dealers selling it online for about $420, so a little smart shopping will save enough money for a 4GB memory card!

A Stylish, Feature-Rich Compact Camera

Compact digital cameras are getting better all the time. Resolutions are climbing; screens are getting larger, while, at the same time, the cameras themselves are getting smaller. And manufacturers are adding functionality such as video capabilities, voice recorder modes and wireless image transfer options. One of the best examples of one of this new generation of compact digital cameras is Nikon’s new CoolPix S51c, an 8.1-megapixel camera with a maximum sensor resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels.

If only cars got better, offered more performance and cost way less than they used to three or four years ago, we’d all be driving Porsches that got 50 miles to the gallon and cost $12,000. The good news for digicam buyers is this happens every day!
The Canon PowerShot A720 IS is a perfect example of this; 6x optical zoom, 8 megapixel sensor in a nice little compact case for $229. Memory cards cost more than this a year or two ago. It also includes Image Stabilization and quite a few different automatic modes to make basic picture taking as easy as falling out of bed.

In my experience, new technology is much like a train ride. Many folks out there, like myself, enjoy riding the new technology train and can’t wait to see where it next takes them. Other segments of the population seem to ride along the new technology train and simply fall off somewhere along their journey. Still others seem to intentionally jump off the technology train with no intention of going any further down the tracks.

When it comes to point-and-shoot digital cameras, Canon has certainly got you covered, with a model to satisfy just about every shooter from beginner to advanced. As for me personally, I prefer a digicam that is compact — not ultra-slim, because that usually means you are paying extra for just the fashion and convenience of thinness. And it’s got to have a more powerful zoom lens (greater than 5X) with other good features too. The new Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is just such a digicam. Want more details? Read on.

The top-of-the-line in Canon’s A series of compacts, the A650 IS features a 12MP sensor like the G9, with a 6x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom and optical stabilization. Retail price is $449 with street price coming in at $399, so if you are pinching pennies at the 12MP level, this is a good alternative. (See a review of the G9 elsewhere in this issue.)

n an ideal world, every serious photographer would carry a close-up lens, a wide-angle lens and a long telephoto all the time, so that just about any situation would be covered. Carrying close-up and wide-angle lenses along most of the time isn’t all that much of a problem, since both are relatively compact, so they easily fit into a camera bag. Still, to always carry them along for those occasional times they’re needed, doesn’t make much sense.

Barely more than 0.5 inch thick, the Casio EX-S880 is a great, little go-everywhere compact camera. At $249 (street price around $209), it might also make a great holiday gift for the photo enthusiast in your household. An 8MP camera with a 3x optical (4x digital) zoom, this is more of a snapshot camera than some of the serious compacts in the 12MP range, but it’s a good value and a lot of fun to use. Considering that 10 years ago a 1MP compact camera would set you back about $1,000, this is an amazing amount of progress!

We don’t expect it to last long, but for the moment, as this is written, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10 is the most technically-sophisticated digital SLR on the market. It comes with all the cutting-edge features that have become practically standards in this camera’s range — dust-reduction, image-stabilization and Live View LCD monitor, all found regularly now, in various combinations. The Lumix L10 goes on from there.
