Sony has announced two new a (alpha) D-SLRs: the a550 (14.2MP) and the a500 (12.3MP). Both cameras feature the new generation of Sony’s Exmor CMOS sensors and are Sony’s first D-SLRs to offer an in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature. It’s Wednesday afternoon and all that most people can think about is how many days, hours, minutes remain until the weekend. But not you, you’re a photographer! You’re never bored, but are always plotting your next photo shoot or researching the new D-SLR you’ve had your eye on. We’re right there with you, friend. To keep the wild world of photography on your mind midweek, here’s our roundup of what’s been happening in it lately.
- The Nikon D-Movie Screening Room presents its latest short film, by Director of Photography Ellen Kuras– of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame. (Still from video above.)
- Tamron presents a timely “Back to School” photo story by photographer Wendy Saunders, who used the Tamron 18-270mm lens to capture one little boy’s big day. Saunders’ photos encourage parents to get creative on this day beyond the ubiquitous lunch pale in the doorway shot.
- Exposure Manager announced their new Pro Lab Direct Printing System for sports and event photographers.

Breaking news: Canon has announced six new PowerShot cameras, most notabley the PowerShot G11. As always, a manufacturer announces a replacement camera for one that is still new itself, and still has a lot of excitement surrounding it. Check out the Digital Photographer review of the Canon PowerShot G10 in the Spring issue to learn about the G11′s predecessor. The new “prosumer,” G11 as DP is wont to call it, will also retail for $499 and “further adds to the legacy” of the G-series, according to Canon with its variety of shooting modes and EOS accessories, though it offers 10-megapixels compared to the G10′s 14.7. Sony has announced the DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1, “The world’s first digital still cameras with back-illuminated ‘EXMOR R’ CMOS sensor technology.” These Cyber-shot cameras are exciting additions to the photo arsenal for shooting in low-light conditions.
