Casio Announces EX-H20G Hybrid GPS Camera

Casio has just announced the EX-H20G—”the first digital camera with autonomic indoor positioning through Hybrid GPS,” according to the manufacturer. The compact 14.1-megapixel EX-H20G is able to “track a user’s last known satellite-acquired position against map data stored in the camera’s internal memory, even while the user is indoors” and is being billed as an ideal travel camera because it can confirm a photographer’s present location and then use its digital compass to determine the best route to their next destination. “After returning home, users can manage and share their geotagged photos and videos captured with the EXH20G using popular photo-sharing Web sites and software which offer geotagging functionality, such as Picasa, Panoramio, Google Earth, Flickr and iPhoto. These platforms will utilize the precise location data embedded into each image’s EXIF file to plot exactly where they were captured on a world map, giving the photographer, as well as their friends and family, the ability to vividly imagine their travels by making the connection with the locations visited and images.” The EX-H20G will be available in November 2010 for $349.99. Canon Announces PowerShot G12 and PowerShot SX30 IS

Canon has announced two new leaders in their lineup of professionally-leaning PowerShot compact cameras—the G12 and the SX30 IS. Here at DP, we’re big fans of the PowerShot G-series (G10 reviewed here and G11 reviewed here), so we were excited about the prospect of a new generation. Upgrades to the 10-megapixel G12 include: built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) scene mode, Canon’s Hybrid IS technology, “a new control dial… [on] the front of the camera…for easy adjusting of camera settings similar to how users operate a Canon Digital SLR camera,” and  a 5x optical zoom lens with wide-angle capabilities starting at 28mm. Let’s hope that the viewfinder offers much more coverage this time around because, really, that has been our biggest complaint with the camera’s predecessors. The G12 will be available in early October for $499.99.

The new PowerShot SX30 IS is being hailed as the “perfect companion for photo enthusiasts capturing memorable images or videos at sporting events or special occasions” because of its super telephoto lens (24mm to 840mm) and a “Zoom Framing Assist button to aid in the tracking and capturing of subjects from a great distance away while keeping the lens in focus.” The 14.1-megapixel SX30 IS will be available in late September for $429.99. Nikon Announces COOLPIX P7000 Advanced Compact Camera

Nikon announced today the latest addition to the COOLPIX lineup of compact digital cameras—the P7000. The 10MP advanced compact follows the COOLPIX P6000 (reviewed here), although with its array of protruding knobs and more professional design, this new Nikon seems to have a similar look to the Canon PowerShot G series (G11 reviewed here). However, if the viewfinder on the P7000 is better than the G11′s (which wouldn’t be tough to beat), this would be a real contender in my book for an ideal high performance compact.

The P7000 aims to attract the professional photographer and new photo enthusiast alike, as it offers pro-level features such as Full Manual Controls (PSAM), RAW file function, 5-Way Vibration Reduction Image Stabilization System and a 7.1x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens (28-200mm f/2.8-5.6), as well as features like Scene Auto Selector for those less comfortable with Manual shooting. The P7000 will be available for $499.95 in late September. More info and images from Nikon below.

Nikon Announces COOLPIX S1100pj

Nikon has announced the new COOLPIX S1100pj–an update to the S1000pj, which was the first compact digital camera to boast a built-in projector. If you recall, we reviewed the first generation camera at the beginning of the year, and quite liked it. Upgrades with the 14.1MP S1100pj include: a 40% increase in projector brightness (14 lumens), a 3-inch touchscreen LCD and the ability to connect the device via USB to project images from a computer. The look of the new generation camera seems to be a lot less sleek and more aimed at maybe seeming like professional equipment—there are knobs and dials where once there was only brushed metal and flat surface. The projector on the front is also much more prominent (helped along by the fact that PROJECTOR is written across it). The COOLPIX S1100pj will be available for $349.95 in September.
