We first mentioned Y Explore last year when we got wind of their photography workshops at California’s Yosemite National Park, and now we’re excited to introduce you to them formally as a new sponsor here on the DP website. Stunning images of the Los Angeles area Station Fire have been circulating for weeks now online and  in newspapers, as area residents and professional photographers alike seek to capture the drama of the blaze that has devistated homes and even taken the lives of brave firefighters here in Southern California. Digital Photographer editor and professional photographer, Lynne Eodice, happens to live very close to the area where a majority of the fire was concentrated last week, and captured the following images with her Canon EOS 5D Mark II full-frame D-SLR using a Canon EF 100-300mm lens on August 29, 2009, just a couple miles from her home.  See more of Lynne’s photos of the fire after the jump…

In Your Neighborhood: Palm Springs, CA

The Palm Springs Photo Festival kicks off on March 29th, offering photographers of all levels a week of seminars, symposiums, portfolio reviews and workshops, one of which is being taught by renown documentary photographer Steve McCurry. McCurry captured the iconic shot above for
National Geographic in 1985 and then famously re-shot the same captivating Afghan woman 17 years later for the publication. He will be leading the workshop entitled ” A Master Class in Documentary Photography”. Another example of the Festival’s great lineup of workshops is the “The Digital Landscape”, which will be taught by acclaimed digital master John Paul Caponigro. In Your Neighborhood: Los Angeles, CA

A lot of us photo enthusiasts in the greater Los Angeles area have been standing by, with building anticipation, for the long awaited Annenberg Space for Photography to finally open its doors. According to the Los Angeles Times Culture Monster blog, the Century City space will finally open on March 27th with an exhibition entitled L8S ANG3LES. Apparently the “8″ refernces the number of LA photographers whose work is included in the show (BIG NAMES!), and the “3″ is for the number of LA Times photographers whose images of LA will also be exhibited.

From the Times:

The inaugural show will spotlight Los Angeles photographers who work in various fields, including fine art photography, documentary projects, architecture, fashion and celebrity portraiture. Images by John Baldessari, Catherine Opie, Greg Gorman, Douglas Kirkland, Tim Street-Porter, Julius Shulman, Lauren Greenfield and Carolyn Cole, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Times photographer, will be shown in the traditional gallery. Lawrence K. Ho, Genaro Molina and Kirk McKoy are the Times staffers to be featured in the projection space.

In Your Neighborhood: Hollywood, CA

This one’s close to my heart. For years, I’ve been traveling to Tijuana, Mexico to visit the children at a few orphanages throughout Baja California with an organization called the Corazon de Vida Foundation. One of the homes that CDV visits monthly is called Casa Hogar Sion, and a group of loving people has developed an organization dedicated to that particular home, called Friends of El Faro. El Faro is constantly in need of the basic supplies to sustain life for the many children who call it home, and the Friends of El Faro have been indispensable in raising awareness and funds on behalf of these children. As we all know, the arts are a great tool for raising awareness, so Friends of El Faro has teamed with talented photographer (and Friends of El Faro founder) Leigh Kilton-Smith and A & I Gallery to create an exhibition of photographs of these beautiful children called I See You. 100% of the exhibit sales will go directly to the orphaned, abandoned and abused children of Tijuana. I can’t think of a better reason to buy original photography.
