A Capable Compact
by Jeff Dorgay
Published March 2008
If only cars got better, offered more performance and cost way less than they used to three or four years ago, we’d all be driving Porsches that got 50 miles to the gallon and cost $12,000. The good news for digicam buyers is this happens every day!
The Canon PowerShot A720 IS is a perfect example of this; 6x optical zoom, 8 megapixel sensor in a nice little compact case for $229. Memory cards cost more than this a year or two ago. It also includes Image Stabilization and quite a few different automatic modes to make basic picture taking as easy as falling out of bed.

The Technology Train Ride
by John B. Holbrook, II
Published March 2008
In my experience, new technology is much like a train ride. Many folks out there, like myself, enjoy riding the new technology train and can’t wait to see where it next takes them. Published March 2008
When it comes to point-and-shoot digital cameras, Canon has certainly got you covered, with a model to satisfy just about every shooter from beginner to advanced. And it’s got to have a more powerful zoom lens (greater than 5X) with other good features too. The new Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is just such a digicam. Want more details? Read on.

A 12MP Performer For Less Than $450
by Jeff Dorgay
Published February 2008
The top-of-the-line in Canon’s A series of compacts, the A650 IS features a 12MP sensor like the G9, with a 6x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom and optical stabilization. Retail price is $449 with street price coming in at $399, so if you are pinching pennies at the 12MP level, this is a good alternative. (See a review of the G9 elsewhere in this issue.)

Like Having 3 Lenses In 1
by Ron Eggers
Published February 2008
n an ideal world, every serious photographer would carry a close-up lens, a wide-angle lens and a long telephoto all the time, so that just about any situation would be covered. Carrying close-up and wide-angle lenses along most of the time isn’t all that much of a problem, since both are relatively compact, so they easily fit into a camera bag. Still, to always carry them along for those occasional times they’re needed, doesn’t make much sense.
